Just before the start of the Team USA vs South Sudan game, Joel Embiid greeted the crowd by walking out to the court. And love was instantly reciprocated by the Stade Pierre-Mauroy crowd with a loud chorus of boos. That’s how close-knit Embiid is to the crowd after his supposed betrayal of France.
Ever since Embiid made his U-turn and decided to play for Team USA by ditching France, the Sixers C faced scathing scrutiny over his decision. Embiid knew what he would get coming to France for the Olympics and so far the home crowd did not disappoint. But surprisingly, he wasn’t the only one getting the smoke.
This Team USA is a united front. So when Embiid was getting through his paces in front of the hostile reception, the whole team joined him to soak the jeering in. Steph Curry was also winding up the crowd, a statement that they were in this together. But they weren’t together when the game between Team USA and South Sudan tipped off. Because Embiid was benched. Joel Embiid finals meets the seat on the bench. Steve Kerr decided to go with Anthony Davis to start the fast-paced game. That’s more of a tactical move rather than shielding Embiid from the hostile environment among the 27k crowd in attendance.
Now when they boo Embiid, the WHOLE TEAM is asking for more noise. Steph particularly so.
