But recently, his name has made the headlines for the strangest of reasons you might think of— his hair! Yes, you read that right!

NASCAR legend Richard Petty’s hair is on auction. And well, it’s quite an odd choice for memorabilia, don’t you think? But, he has sold much weirder things, like bank statements too! Many fans on social media are not taking this ‘hair auction’ as a nod to NASCAR history, but rather as an element of disgust!

When it comes to auctioning things and collecting things, there seems to only be a thin line before things get weird. From false teeth to half-smoked cigars and cat’s ashes, almost anything is being auctioned and collected nowadays. In fact, some weird items fetch mind-boggling prices. For example, the false tooth from Churchill sold for a whooping £18,000. 

Riding the wave, one such bizarre auction is the Richard Petty’s hair. Even though it didn’t receive a great bid, it still is bizarre to many. The auction page with the product had a description that said, “This bag of original Richard Petty hair measures approximately 2″ x 3″ in size and comes directly from the personal collection of Richard Petty. The bag is sealed with a tamper-proof authentication hologram.” 

Now, there is not one thing that is weird here, but multiple. The fact that hair is being auctioned is weird and the fact that Richard Petty has been collecting his hair for auction is even weirder. And what is even more bizarre is the fact that this isn’t the first time he has auctioned his hair. Back in 2018 too, he had sold his hair. Believe it or not, back in 2018, he went on to sell even stranger things like his old clothes, Walmart greeter tags, expired IDs, and even his school report cards!

This time the King’s hair fetched a surprising bid of $31.50, which might seem modest, but the fact that it’s just hair has caused quite an outcry. Fans are not pleased and, let’s just say that even though some people might find it fascinating, it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. 

Fans grossed out by bizarre Richard Petty auction choice

Surely Richard Petty would have many more things to give from his belongings. Hair, although a very personal belonging, is just hair! NASCAR fans are not pleased and have taken to Reddit to share their displeasure and disgust with the auction. One fan said, “Gross,” and just that one word highlights the sentiments of various others. 

Richard Petty is the winningest NASCAR driver there is. Surely he must have many trophies and more to auction off. And hence it’s not comprehensible why he would go with hair in the first place. One fan said, “But … but why?” Well, this question has many scratching their heads over it, and seems like even Petty fans wouldn’t dare buy his hair. One fan said, “I am die-hard Richard Petty fan…I bleed Petty blue… I am not touching that sh*t with a 50 ft pole.”

The fact that the hair comes with authentication, much like how gold is certified, is pretty out of the world. One fan couldn’t help but crack a joke, “I’m surprised it’s not autographed, too.”

But some fans had a business idea of cloning him! One fan said, “Let’s buy it and go see if we can clone him.” And another fan added more flair to the comment saying, “Yeah clone another Richard petty and his clone beat his 200-win record.”
