The NBA has a slew of media industries surrounding it, whose programming centers on content from the league. However, the game of basketball itself sometimes takes a backseat to what is more ‘sensational’. While this may fly in the short term, the true fans of the league are beginning to understand it and are even urging the league’s commissioner, Adam Silva, into action.

The main issue is that ESPN seems to turn a blind eye to the current NBA playoffs. With the biggest names, such as LeBron James, already in the offseason, many fans notice a lack of coverage of the historic playoff performances of Nikola Jokic and Anthony Edwards. Disrespecting the very nature of the game they cover.

On X, Anthony F. Irwin voiced his opinion by sharing a photo of Stephen A. Smith’s ‘First Take’ covering the Boston Celtics vs. Los Angeles Lakers dynasty debate amid a heated playoff run. Well, a third MVP probably didn’t cut it. Irwin said,  “This is such garbage, man. Adam Silver needs to demand more of his tv partner. ESPN is actively detrimental to the NBA. “

Irwin’s call to action also seems to resonate with other NBA fans, as they passionately commented below his post. “We’re in the midst of the playoffs and this is what they’re wasting time on,” wrote one fan, highlighting the absurdity of the coverage. Another fan doubled down, writing, “If this was August, I’d get it. What are they thinking?” Regardless of what these fans implore, Silver might have his hands full with another broadcaster at the moment.

Adam Silver’s $2.5 Billion decision over TNT

While the playoffs rage on in full swing, a decision about the NBA’s broadcasting rights for the future is being made. However, the biggest loser from it could be its current partner, TNT. According to reports earlier this month, we learned that NBC was willing to pony up $2.5 billion to secure NBA broadcasting rights, which meant Warner Bros. Discovery (TNT’s parent company) needed to fork over $2.8 billion if it wanted to win the bidding war.
This notion was further affirmed by Bill Simmons on his podcast, who said,  “One of the funniest things ever is that we’re all pretending the TV deal wasn’t done like a week-and-a-half ago… I think it’s done. I think Warner already lost it. I don’t know why we’re waiting till after the playoffs. Maybe that’s how they have to do it, but it’s a wrap. NBC’s getting it.” The most unfortunate aftermath of this would be the fact that a show like ‘Inside the NBA’ will stop, prompting the end of the era for the league.
