Over time, we have seen plenty of changes in NASCAR. The governing body has adopted several approaches to their way of viewing things. While it has its pros and cons, there always remains a huge amount of unpredictability combined with inconsistency. That is what Dale Earnhardt Jr didn’t want. But recently, seeing some of NASCAR’s decision-making, he’s left stunned.
Junior has always been vocal about NASCAR being soft with their way of scrutinizing certain events. This season though, the way they have gone about their business is surprising not just for him but to many of the fans. Dale Jr recently described what has baffled him.
NASCAR’s sudden change of approach shocks Dale Earnhardt Jr
Speaking on one of the latest episodes of his podcast, “The Dale Jr. Download,” the 48-year-old discussed several things. He gave his insights on NASCAR penalizing teams and drivers after the Phoenix Raceway. Co-host Mike Davis described the hypocrisy of some, especially after what happened with Denny Hamlin. As per him, on one side people demand a happening race and on the other side, they criticize if the drivers are vocal with their opinion.
To this, Dale Jr said, “Well, so there you go, that’s our take on the HMS penalties, the Kaulig penalties, the Denny Hamlin penalty, maybe I feel like it was a big harsh across the board, maybe because of so much all in one day, I don’t really know.”
He then explains how he had earlier hoped NASCAR to be strict with their approach. He also admits that the current set of decisions has come out of the blue even for him. Junior said, “I know that I have said in the past that I want NASCAR to be mean and stern and come down with a hammer on everything. But boy, I think this was a bigger hammer than I ever thought they would use.”
Surely, this was unexpected for many. Recently, even Kyle Busch has been confirmed as the latest victim of NASCAR’s stern approach.
NASCAR brings down the hammer on Kyle Busch before the Atlanta race
It looked like NASCAR were going just after Hendrick Motorsports this season but that isn’t the case. This time it is Richard Childress Racing’s Kyle Busch who’s on the receiving end of NASCAR’s wrath.

Just before the Atlanta race, it is reported that Rowdy’s #8 Chevrolet Camaro failed the tech on two different occasions. Because of this, the two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion loses his car chief and also the chance to select the pit stall.
The 2023 season is only getting more dramatic day after day. Can we expect some more drama before the race starts on Sunday? At this moment, no one can predict.
